Appalachian Centers
- The Center for Appalachian Studies and Services - Located at East Tennessee State University. Site includes archived manuscripts, photographs, and sound and image recordings.
- Berea College Appalachian Center - Site includes information on Appalachian Studies courses, links to the Appalachian Artifacts and Exhibits studio, Brushy Fork Institute, Entrepreneurship for the Public Good program, and Appalachian Heritage magazine.
Organizations Serving Appalachia
- Appalshop - Media arts center in Whitesburg, Ky, dedicated to preservation of Appalachian culture. Streaming audio from WMMT, a radio station that features a wide variety of music that you won’t typically hear on other radio stations.
- The Highlander Research and Education Center - Located in New Market, TN. Provides programs of education and support to poor and working people fighting economic injustice, poverty, prejudice, and environmental destruction.
- Appalachian Regional Commission. Site for the Federal agency that funds a variety of Appalachian development initiatives, Appalachia Magazine, maps, conferences, and more.
- Appalachian Studies Association. ASA hosts the annual Appalachian Studies Conference, publishes the Journal of Appalachian Studies, and is the professional organization for those with Appalachian service and research interests.
- Appalachian College Association. Organization supporting small and private colleges in Appalachia. Includes links for member colleges and link for the Appalachian Central Library project.
Organizations Serving Rural Communities (Appalachia and beyond)
- The Center for Rural Development in Somerset, Ky - Serves rural Kentucky through a variety of development programs including planning, education, public safety, cultural events and telecommunications technology and by providing user-friendly meeting/convention space.
- Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues - Includes reports on media coverage in rural areas, links to resources for rural journalists, and the Rural Blog.
Research Resources
- Center for Virtual Appalachia - Provides a collection of articles, reports, books, multimedia resources, and links referencing life in Appalachia.
- Kentuckiana Digital Library. Links to library collections at Kentucky universities and public libraries, including the extensive Bert T. Combs Appalachian Collection at the University of Kentucky.
- Kentucky Map Stats. This site provides county-level census bureau data.
- W. L. Eury Library at Appalachian State University. A large and comprehensive Appalachian library collection, including manuscripts, books, genealogy collection, etc.
- West Virginia Archives and History. Many links to Appalachian Web sites, library sites, etc.
