Kentucky Young Researchers Program

The Kentucky Young Researchers Program, established in 1996-97, was originally designed to support the introduction of high school students to the excitement of research and discovery and to encourage the future enrollment of outstanding students at the University of Kentucky. Students from various central Kentucky high schools have worked with UK faculty on a wide variety of research projects. Sometimes this is done for academic credit at the high-school level, and sometimes it is initiated by the student as an extracurricular activity. We want to attract such outstanding students to UK as undergraduates and, hopefully, in future years as graduate or professional students.

Today, high school students from across the state work on research projects under the direct supervision of UK faculty mentors. For your convenience, student applications are available through this Web site and in the program office for Research Assessment.

The program is open to mentors of high-school juniors or seniors with up to $500 per student made available annually to the academic department or program. High school seniors must have filed an application for admission as a degree-seeking undergraduate student as a prerequisite for participation in this program. At the end of each project, all student participants are required to submit a written report of the project findings and conclusions, where applicable. The report is to be submitted to the faculty mentor, with a copy forwarded to the KYRP program office

The funds are provided to support the student's work, either in a laboratory setting or travel to present project. Allowable charges include preparation cost for a scientific meeting poster, travel cost incurred by the student in order to make a research project presentation.

This program is designed to encourage and support more research faculty to mentor high schools students.
