Primary Research Focus: Dr. Radun's primary areas of research are power electronics and electromechanics. During the past year Dr. Radun's research has focused on the application of SiC power semiconductors to high frequency DC/ DC converters, sensorless control of switched reluctance motors for aircraft actuators, and active filter development to reduce the size of the input filter to switched reluctance motor drives. Development of dynamic magnetic models that include magnetic losses has been a part of this research and a primary focus of the TVA endowed research.
Key Contributions: Dr. Radun's most significant research contributions have been related to the development of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) based aircraft starter/generator. His research was foundational to this technology beginning at General Electric (GE) Corporate Research and Development (CR&D) and continuing at the University of Kentucky. This research supports the Unites States Air Force's more electric aircraft initiative. Dr. Radun's research at the University of Kentucky that has supported the development of SRM based starter/generators was predominately done jointly with various companies on AFRL research contracts while some was done as a summer consultant. This research developed SRM models, methods for calculating magnetic losses, development of SRM starter/generator system models, development of SRM control techniques, and the development of power electronic converters for the SRM. The SRM and system models have been used by researchers at a number of companies and universities inside and outside of the United States. Companies that Dr. Radun has worked jointly with on AFRL contracts while at UK include GE, Sundstrand Corporation (now part of Hamilton-Sundstrand), Leland Electro Systems, UES Corporation, Northrop Gruman, Mechatonic Systems, Rockwell Scientific, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and H. R. Textron. Working closely with these companies and AFRL is an important reason his research has impacted the JSF.
