Proposal Steps

Proposal Route

Step 1: Develop Original Idea

You

  • Review the literature
  • Notify the chair
  • Contact Proposal Development Office (PDO)

  • Identifies potential sources of funding
  • Assists in proposal planning
  • Identifies UK faculty with similar interests

 

Step 2: Pre-Proposal Activities

You

  • Review potential sources
  • Prepare brief, informal pre-proposal with budget estimate
  • Contact potential sponsors

Proposal Development Office (PDO)

  • Identifies previously funded projects
  • Assists in constructing pre-proposal
  • Serves as liaison with agency personnel
  • Provides institutional descriptions of UK facilities and resources

 

Step 3: Draft Formal Proposal

You

  • Prepare complete draft of proposal and ask colleagues to review and critique
  • Prepare draft budget
  • Contact Office of Research Integrity (ORI) or appropriate administrative office for advice on compliance requirements
  • Complete and submit separate applications to institutional committees (human subjects, animal care, biohazards, etc.)
  • Meet with Proposal Development Office (PDO), as needed, to discuss proposal development issues

  • Critiques proposal drafts
  • Provides feedback and any needed referrals

Sponsored Projects Administration (OSPA)

  • Reviews draft budget

 

Step 4: Prepare and Submit Formal Proposal

You

  • Make revisions on final draft of formal proposal
  • Obtain approval from appropriate institutional committee
  • Complete and sign Internal Approval Form
  • Obtain appropriate campus signatures
  • Be available for last-minute discussions to brief deans or other administrative personnel

  • Reviews proposal for compliance with sponsor and UK guidelines
  • Transmits proposal to sponsor

 

Step 5: Follow-Up

You

  • Be available for negotiation discussion and revision if necessary
  • If not funded, request peer review comments
  • If not funded, contact Proposal Development Office (PDO) for assistance in planning a resubmission

  • Determines status of pending proposal
  • Negotiates any changes
  • If funded, reviews award terms and establishes account

Proposal Development Office (PDO)

  • If not funded, advices on resubmission processes and strategies

 

Step 6: Resubmission Application

You

  • Respond to reviewer comments
  • Draft resubmission as appropriate

  • Assists in developing resubmission
