Cooperative Doctoral Programs

The University of Kentucky offers a number of Cooperative Doctoral Programs in selected academic areas in conjunction with other state universities. These include doctoral programs in Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation, Musicology, Physics, and Social Work with the University of Louisville; programs in Biology and in Geology with Eastern Kentucky University; a program in History with Western Kentucky University.

Cooperative Doctoral (Ed.D.) Programs in Education are offered in conjunction with four regional comprehensive universities across the Commonwealth - Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University, Murray State University, and Western Kentucky University. The primary objectives of this cooperative arrangement are to provide:

These programs permit qualified candidates to complete as much as one year of graduate course work beyond the master's degree at the local cooperating University. A minimum of one year of course work must be taken at UK. The Cooperative Ed.D. is offered in the following program areas: (Note that the Ed.D. degree in Instruction & Administration is offered through the UK Department of Administration & Supervision and the Department of Curriculum & Instruction.)

For further information, contact the graduate office at the participating regional university nearest you, the UK director of graduate studies in the program of interest, or the UK Graduate School's Office of Distance Learning Programs. The latter can be reached at (859) 257-2411, or by using the toll-free number maintained by the University's Distance Learning Technology Center (1-800-828-0439). The latest information about the UK Graduate School, the academic departments participating in the Joint programs, faculty research interests, directors of graduate studies, and application materials, is available from the Graduate School or the College of Education.

If you have an interest in any of these cooperative Ed.D. programs, it is very important that you discuss your interests, background, and ultimate goals with the director of graduate studies in that program as soon as possible in your graduate career, and certainly no later than when you first begin thinking about taking post-master's course work. This is to help ensure that the post-master's course work that you may take at the participating regional university is selected wisely, with an eye to taking those courses which will fulfill doctoral course work requirements.
