Faculty Grants for
Distance Learning Course Preparation

The Graduate School Distance Learning Office can provide one-time grants, currently $750 per 3-credit course, to faculty who are developing new, or adapting existing, graduate courses for delivery wholly or largely by distance-learning technology such as by satellite, compressed video, CD, and/or the World Wide Web. To be eligible, the course must be (a) at the graduate level (500- through 700-level), (b) expected to be taken by at least several graduate students, (c) first offered in a term from Fall 2004 through Fall 2005, and (d) preferably a part of a larger and coherent effort to offer most or all of a graduate certificate or degree program via distance learning.

These funds are intended for the direct benefit of the faculty member involved, as an inducement to undertake the extra work (and often cost) involved in preparing such a course. Many units use this as a direct overload payment to the faculty member for the additional investment of time and effort in course development. Ultimately, the exact disposition depends on the faculty member’s DOE agreement and negotiation with the chair/director and college dean involved.

There are no forms. All that is required is a simple, single-page signed request from the faculty member, co-signed by the director or chair, that requests transfer of the DL Course Preparation grant funds. Faculty may apply at any time during the year, but no later than May 13, 2005, for support during the 2004-2005 fiscal year. The required supporting data are:

  1. Instructor’s name
  2. Course number, title, and credits
  3. The technology medium used – satellite, CD, ITV, and/or Web
  4. The academic term the course will first be delivered via distance-learning technology
  5. The distance-learning site(s) to which it will be delivered
  6. The specific use to which the funds will be put
  7. An account (account number and object code) into which to transfer the funds (and a position number if it is to be used for salary and/or benefits)
  8. The name, address, and phone number of the person to whom copies of the financial paperwork should be sent

Note that there are University and SACS approval and reporting requirements associated with the conversion of an existing course over to a multimedia distance-learning version. Further information on these requirements and on other graduate distance learning activities can be found on the Web at
