The Provost, via the Graduate School, will fund the new pre-employment background checks required for all graduate assistants in 2006-07. Reimbursement information will be forthcoming next week from Lori Eckdahl, Graduate School Business Officer.
=======================================================================
Information about the background checks was previously emailed by Pat Whitlow on July 6:
Beginning July 12, all new student hires, including all graduate assistants (RA/TA/GA) will be required by KY state law to have a pre-employment background check prior to beginning work as a graduate assistant. This includes all new hires that have not worked in some capacity for UK within the past five years. To facilitate this process, Human Resources is requiring each academic hiring unit to set up open positions for graduate assistants through the HR on-line job applicant system. Using those position numbers, you may then communicate with your new hires and ask them to log onto the Direct User website where they will submit the required information for the background check.
Human Resources will be providing training in July for faculty or departmental assistant responsible for graduate assistants who will need to be able to use the new Direct User function of the University’s Online Employment System (OES). You may review available training times (between July 6 and July 28) and register for OES Direct User Training through the My Training system on the HR Training & Development (HRTD) web site. Follow this link to review available training dates and to register now:

In addition, each hiring department needs to assist in communicating this new requirement to new graduate assistants. Attached is a memo from the Graduate School that will be sent to teaching assistants currently registered for the Fall TA orientation program. Please send this information to all of your RAs and GAs as well so they are aware of the background check.
