Kentucky Graduate Scholarship
Important changes to KGS for 2009-10
Due to both past and future budget considerations, the Graduate School is phasing out the Kentucky Graduate Scholarship (KGS) tuition scholarship and initiating a new award, the Ezra Gillis Graduate Tuition Scholarship.
The KGS, which awards the out-of-state (OOS) portion of tuition as a scholarship to academically qualified, unfunded OOS graduate students, is being phased out after the current year, 2008-09. Continuing graduate students who were awarded KGS eligibility will be able to access that award under the terms of their original offer. Entering students for spring and summer 2009 will be under the most recent version of the KGS.
Important funding changes to KGS for 2008-09
For 2008-09, currently enrolled, continuing students with remaining KGS eligibility will be funded at the level of commitment originally awarded.
New KGS-eligible graduate students (beginning Fall 2008) will be awarded in the following way:
-- new doctoral students will receive a full KGS award;
-- new master's students in top quartile programs will receive a full KGS award;
-- all other master's students will be offered an award equivalent to half the out-of-state portion of the standard graduate tuition rate.
Until the University budget is determined and tuition rates are established for 2008-09, the following estimates are provided for full-time graduate enrollment in nine hours or more:
| Estimated UK Grad Tuition | KGS Estimates for 2008-09: |
Annual | Per semester |
| $16,362 | Full out-of-state portion: | $8,868 | $4,434 |
| $16,362 | Half out-of-state portion: | $4,434 | $2,217 |
A merit scholarship opportunity for non-resident applicants to the University of Kentucky Graduate School
New non-resident students (both domestic and international) admitted into a graduate degree program at the University of Kentucky may be eligible for a tuition scholarship based on prior academic performance*. This scholarship award covers the standard out-of-state graduate tuition rate thereby allowing awardees to attend the University at the in-state tuition rate**.
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants for fall, 2008 must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 or greater on undergraduate work and on any prior graduate work. In cases where the student's grades are not based on a 4.00 scale, the Dean of the Graduate School establishes guidelines for the determination of scholarship eligibility. Once enrolled, awardees must maintain a GPA of 3.50 or higher; failure to do so will result in permanent revocation of the scholarship.
KGS awards are limited to a maximum of 4 semesters in a master's program, 8 semesters in a doctoral program and 10 semesters in a master's followed by a doctoral program. A KGS award in either or both summer sessions (I and II) of one year counts as one semester utilized. Students cannot receive the scholarship for a second master's degree.
Many graduate programs offer teaching and/or research assistantships that also provide tuition scholarships. These scholarships and the tuition scholarships that accompany most fellowships take priority over the KGS. However, students are permitted to combine scholarships up to the value of the out-of-state portion of tuition as appropriate. The KGS is strictly a tuition scholarship; under no circumstances can it be distributed as a stipend, or used towards books or other expenses.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, the application for admission and all supporting materials (including transcripts and test scores) must be received by:
February 1 for fall enrollment
September 1 for spring enrollment
March 1 for summer I or II enrollment
Scholarship eligibility will be determined once all application materials have been received; no prior assessment of an applicant's eligibility will be provided. Awardees will receive confirmation by mail at the time of acceptance to the Graduate School.
* Students accepted into the MBA program are not eligible for KGS awards
** In cases where graduate programs charge a differential tuition rate, the Graduate School will pay the standard graduate tuition rate only
