As the designated comprehensive university for research and graduate education within the state, the University of Kentucky has long been a leader in delivering quality graduate courses and programs at various sites across the Commonwealth. The bulk of instructional delivery is by faculty traveling to nearby off-campus locations for instruction via traditional means, and by compressed video or interactive television (ITV) at an increasing number of sites across the state. Almost all of the full degree programs require students to travel to selected sites within the Commonwealth usually at one of the Community Colleges for courses or to spend some time on the Lexington Campus.
These programs permit non-traditional and place-bound students to pursue graduate courses and degrees, which otherwise would be impossible for them.
A number of courses are offered periodically via satellite down-link, with faculty interaction via telephone, FAX, and e-mail. The UK Mining Engineering program is available entirely via satellite. An increasing number of faculty are developing undergraduate and graduate courses available wholly or in part via the Web.
