Lexington Herald-Leader Fellowship
2008-2009
Endowed by a gift from the Lexington Herald-Leader, this fellowship will support one currently enrolled or newly admitted student pursuing a graduate degree outside of the field of journalism (see eligible programs below). The aim of the fellowship is to retain excellent Kentucky students from minority and poverty backgrounds in the local community. The fellowship provides a $12,000 stipend, a tuition scholarship, and student health insurance, as well as a summer internship.
CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY
- Candidates for the Herald-Leader fellowship must be nominated by the program's director of graduate studies.
- Candidates may be enrolling for their first term of study in the program in the 2008 Fall Semester, or may be currently enrolled graduate students.
- Candidates must have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or above.
- Candidates must have a graduate grade point average of 3.5 or above on any previous graduate work.
- New students applying to enter a program whose most recent degree is from a college or university outside the U.S. are not eligible.
- Students applying to either master's or doctoral programs in the following programs are eligible: Accounting, Business Administration, Communication, Computer Science, Diplomacy, Economics, Electrical Engineering, English, History, Library Science, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology, and Spanish.
- Awardees must be available to participate in a paid 12-week summer internship with the Herald-Leader. The internship will be scheduled to begin in May or June 2008.
- Awardees must be available for a year-long mentoring experience with a manager of the Herald-Leader .
NOMINATION PROCESS
In the following order, the nomination must include:
- A completed Fellowship Nomination form specific to the Herald-Leader Fellowship;
- A letter of nomination from the program's Director of Graduate Studies, including information about why this candidate meets the Herald-Leader's criteria.
- Photocopies of transcripts from all schools attended, both undergraduate and graduate;
- A photocopy of the GRE or GMAT scores;
- Letters of recommendation from at least two academic or professional references;
- Two page biographical essay, including background information and career aspirations by nominee;
- A resume or curriculum vitae.
DUE DATE FOR NOMINATIONS
Nominations with all appropriate documentation (five complete sets) must reach the Graduate School Funding Office, 203 Gillis Building, no later than Monday, February 11, 2008.
