Jeffrey Research Fellowship for Tobacco Research
2009-2010


The Jeffrey Fellowship was established by Mrs. Helen Lasby Jeffrey in memory of her husband, Dr. Robert N. Jeffrey. The primary purpose of the Jeffrey program is to provide financial support to graduate students engaged in research on tobacco at the University of Kentucky . The Jeffrey Fellowship stipend is $15,000 per year, plus a tuition scholarship, and student health insurance.   One fellowship will be awarded for the 2009-2010 academic year.  The Jeffrey Fellowship is a 12-month award, as long as the recipient is enrolled.

CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY

  • Nominees for the Jeffrey Fellowships must be University of Kentucky graduate students who are actively engaged in or who have specific proposals for research pertaining to tobacco.
  • Individuals who have been awarded Jeffrey Fellowships may be nominated for renewal of the fellowship.
  • Nominees must submit a report describing in detail the proposed research project, its objectives, and the progress to date.
  • All applicants are encouraged to submit material that demonstrates potential in research (publications, abstracts, research reports).

NOMINATION PROCESS

Candidates for Jeffrey Fellowships must be nominated by the program’s director of graduate studies. In the following order, nominations must include:

  • A completed fellowship nomination form specific to the Jeffrey Fellowship;
  • Photocopies of transcripts from all graduate schools attended;
  • Two letters of recommendation from college or university faculty members who have served as advisors or teachers of the applicant. The focus of these recommendations should be towards the applicant's potential and/or accomplishments in research.
  • Description of the proposed research (see criteria).

DUE DATE FOR NOMINATIONS

Nominations with all appropriate documentation (four complete sets) must reach the Graduate School Funding Office, 203 Gillis Building, no later than Friday, February 20, 2009.
