Fellowships for Graduate or Professional Study
2008-2009

In honor of Charles T. Wethington Jr., the president of the University of Kentucky from 1989 to 2001, the University will annually provide funding for fellowships up to $20,000 to be awarded to UK graduating seniors who plan to continue their post-baccalaureate education in one of the University's graduate or professional programs. The fellowships will be awarded for a first year of graduate or professional study at UK and are not renewable for subsequent years. Preference will be given to Kentucky residents who are first-generation college students.
CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY
- Candidates must be UK seniors (having graduated at the end of the 2007 Fall Semester, or expecting to graduate at the end of the 2008 Spring Semester or the 2008 Second Summer Session).
- Candidates may not have been previously enrolled in a graduate or professional program.
- Candidates must meet the academic and other criteria required for admission by the program in which they plan to enroll.
- Candidates should have demonstrated high academic achievement in an undergraduate program of study at the University of Kentucky .
- Candidates should provide evidence of participation and leadership roles in university and community life during their undergraduate program of study.
- Preference will be given to residents of Kentucky .
- Preference will be given to first-generation college students.
NOMINATION PROCESS
In the following order, nominations must include:
- A completed fellowship nomination form specific to the Matthews/Singletary/Wethington Fellowships;
- Photocopy of the student's UK undergraduate transcript, and all other transcripts;
- Letter from the student's college advisor stating when all baccalaureate degree requirements are expected to be completed (if such is not already the case);
- Photocopy of official GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, PCAT or DAT scores;
- Photocopy of application submitted for admission to a graduate or professional program at UK;
- Photocopy of letter of acceptance to a graduate or professional program at UK (if such is already available);
- Three letters of recommendation, of which at least two must be from University of Kentucky professors. These letters do NOT have to be in sealed envelopes. The letters should clearly indicate they are for a Matthews/Singletary/Wethington Fellowship nominations and should be submitted as part of the nomination packet, if at all possible.
- Candidate's personal statement (not to exceed two double-spaced pages) relating to career goals and providing evidence of participation and leadership roles in university and community life during the undergraduate years of study. Also, if appropriate, include background information concerning candidate as first-generation college student;
- Resume, including awards and honors, voluntary activities, and employment.
Candidates must supply a total of five collated sets in order to be considered for all three fellowships. These sets must be stapled in the top left corner. Do not use binders or notebooks.
SELECTION PROCESS
A committee of faculty members will examine all applications and select recipients.
DUE DATE FOR NOMINATIONS
Nominations with all appropriate documentation (five collated sets) must reach the Graduate School Funding Office no later than Monday, February 11, 2008.
