Animal Resources and
Procedures Handbook
University of Kentucky
Prepared by the Office of
Research Integrity - IACUC Staff and
the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources
Revised
03/17/06
PREFACE
The purpose of this
manual is to delineate the University's animal care and use policies and
procedures, discuss components of the University's program and describe
resources available for the procurement, maintenance and use of animals at
the University of Kentucky. This manual is designed to be a reference tool
for University of Kentucky faculty, researchers, technicians and students
who use animals in research and teaching. The manual contains five
sections, which include information on ethics and humane considerations,
external regulations, University of Kentucky regulations and
administration, policies and procedures pertaining to all aspects of the
University's animal care and use program and services provided by the
Division of Laboratory Animal Resources. The appendices include resource
materials which serve as a valuable reference for anyone involved in the
care and use of animals.
The use of laboratory
animals in teaching and research is a fundamental part of the biomedical
sciences. The use of animals constitutes a special privilege to the
scientific community. Therefore, it is incumbent upon each animal user to
fulfill all moral, as well as legal responsibilities. Therein lies much of
the hope for continued animal research and related medical progress--for
the benefit of humans as well as animals.
Faculty, staff and
students are encouraged to review this handbook and provide comments and
suggestions that can be incorporated in updated revisions to the Animal
Resources and Procedures Handbook.
