Back to Faculty Research Support Guide Contents

The programs listed in the UK Faculty Research Support Guide are available to full-time faculty members only — regular, special, research or clinical title series. All requests for internal support require the approval of and electronic submission through the college administration and department chair or center & institute director.

Requests and proposals are to be submitted to Kathy Stanwix-Hay. Indicate PI's name and program name in subject line.

Bridge Funding

The objective of bridge funding is to sustain the research programs of productive faculty members through a difficult period so that they can return to a productive research program. Two “bridge” situations occur with some regularity:

  • An investigator has multiple funded projects, one of which is not funded in renewal
  • An investigator’s only funded project has not been renewed.

Research will consider bridge requests in either case.

Proposal:

  • An investigator’s only funded project has not been renewed.
  • A brief cover page, explaining the nature of the request.
  • The researcher must forward the original (or most recently reviewed) application and the critiques of all recent submissions.
  • A brief (two pages) response to the critiques, indicating how the support will be used to either improve a future resubmission, or institute a new research program that can attract extramural support.
  • A budget is essential, clearly indicating funds requested from Research. If funds have been requested from other sources, or secured from those sources (such as a department or college), indicate that also.
  • Critical input from department chair or center director and relevant associate dean for research.

This program supports the following expenses:

  • Research supplies
  • Salary for research technical personnel
  • Minor research equipment
  • Travel to research sites, such as field sites or museums

The program will generally not support:

  • faculty salaries
  • graduate tuition or fees
  • travel to meetings
  • consultant costs
  • equipment over $5,000
  • routine office equipment
  • General use desktop or laptop computers

Review:

Reviews will be conducted primarily within the Office of the Vice President for Research rather than by committee. Ad hoc consultation and consultation with the Associate Deans for Research are often part of this process.

Awards:

Details of the funding will generally be specified in the award. Generally, funding will be for one year or less or until external funding is obtained, whichever comes first. Funds may not be carried beyond that time, nor used to support other activities.
