All requests for internal support require the approval of the college administration and department chair or center & institute director.

Major Research Equipment Grants are to be submitted through the chair or director to the dean’s office and entire packets routed to Office of the Vice President for Research, 311 Main Building, 0032. Individual proposals should not be emailed.

Major Research Equipment Grants

Major Research Equipment Proposals were reviewed May 6, 2008 by a diverse ad hoc faculty panel chosen to represent the various areas requesting major equipment.

Nancy Harrington, Communication
Karin High, Physiology
Art Hunt, Plant and Soil Sciences
David Kaetzel, Pharmacology
Barbara Knutson, Chemical and Materials Engineering
Mark Meier, Chemistry
Martha Peterson, Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics
Brent Seales, Computer Science
Chuck Staben, Associate Vice President for Research

Our office received 45 proposals with requests totaling $2.6 million.  Unfortunately, we could only budget $500,000 to fund the program this year.  The proposals covered diverse research areas and they contained requests for replacing aging equipment as well as for equipment to bring new research capabilities to our campus.  Both of these were considered valid requests for this program.  The following criteria were used in the review process but the priority assigned to each varied among the proposals and/or reviewers:

  • number of users whose research programs will benefit from the requested equipment
  • how essential the equipment is to the research program
  • potential impact of the equipment, particularly for new capabilities
  • availability of similar equipment on campus
  • priority assigned by the dean of each college
