Funding Opportunities

  • USGS 104(g) National Research Grant Program: The United States Geological Survey, in cooperation with the National Institutes for Water Resources, provides matching grants to support research on the topics of water supply and water availability. Any investigator at an institution of higher learning in the United States is eligible. For more information, see Sponsored Research.

  • USGS 104(b) Annual Base Grant: Under Section 104(b) of the Water Resources Research Act, annual base grants are awarded to serve the needs of the state, region and nation by supporting and encouraging research and technology transfer in the area of water resources. For more information, see Sponsored Research.

  • KWRI assists faculty members in securing individual grants and contracts through proposal development. This activity includes the development of special agreements with public- and private-sector organizations for team proposals that may result in contracts to conduct research and service activities. Examples include Memorandum of Agreement signed with the Kentucky Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection and the Kentucky River Authority. Internships

  • KWRI Internship: KWRI typically employs one or two undergraduate interns during the Fall and Spring semesters as well as in the summer. If you are interested in such a position, please contact Steve Evans.

  • Beam Suntory Internship: Beam Suntory currently supports two summer intern students to conduct studies of water availability, quality, and use at the Kentucky distilleries. For more information, please contact Steve Evans

The University of Kentucky offers several undergraduate and graduate degree options for students interested in water related topics. Examples of such are listed below. There are also many courses found throughout the University curriculum that focus on water and can be taken as an elective. 

 

 

K-12 Students

Kentucky Forestry and Entomology Leadership

The Kentucky Forest Leadership Program is a week-long, residential program is designed for high school students completing their sophomore and junior years. The Kentucky Forest Leadership Program offers three educational tracks: Forestry, Entomology and Wildlife. While choosing a track provides you the opportunity to experience a concentrated program, the three tracks will work together throughout the week just as real-life natural resources experts do. Water Pioneers Commonwealth Collaborative Program 

Water Pioneers provides Robinson Scholars (high school students) with experiences and curriculum for in-depth study of an Appalachian watershed. The students use this knowledge to partner with East Kentucky PRIDE educators, Kentucky River Watershed Watch volunteers, and other interested local groups to increase awareness of Best Management Practices for water quality in their respective counties.
