A University of Kentucky team is linking with a nationally-known education innovator to move beyond what school was before the COVID-19 pandemic.

For 11 years, STEM Experiences camps have given students in second grade through high school opportunities to get a sneak peak of what it feels like to learn in university classrooms.

On May 7 and 8 the UK College Education offers the free conference: Education and Civil Rights for the New Decade.

Mohr-Schroeder is a professor of STEM Education and Associate Dean for Clinical Preparation and Partnerships at the University of Kentucky College of Education. Her term as President will begin in 2022.

The STEM Through Authentic Research and Training (START) program at UK is creating a unique pipeline to promote careers for underrepresented populations, first-generation college students, and girls and women in STEM. START is funded by a five-year, $1.3 million Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.

When respondents were asked what five words best characterized how they felt during the Fall 2020 semester, the most common responses were “anxious,” “overwhelmed,” “stress,” “tired” and “worry.”

Christian Brady was the first T.W. Lewis Dean of the Lewis Honors College at the University of Kentucky. He is a scholar of ancient Hebrew and Jewish literature, and has been a long-time national leader in honors education, coming to UK in 2017 after a 10-year stint as dean of the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State University.

"We looked at elementary and middle school performance on the K-PREP reading and math assessments, as well as the performance of high school students on the ACT. Student, community and district characteristics were also taken into consideration."

Kelly G. Pennell, Gill Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and director of the UK Superfund Research Center (UK-SRC), has co-authored an article detailing lessons learned about stakeholder engagement and risk communication relevant for COVID-19 and school reopening.

“We have, essentially, invented a new way of doing research. By using publicly available podcasts, anyone can go back and listen to participants’ conversations in full and make their own conclusions about what was discussed,” Vasquez Heilig said.
