COVID-19 Data Dashboard Released
On Wednesday UK published a comprehensive dashboard, to be updated daily, with information relevant to the current campus impact of COVID-19. Data in the dashboard are presented in the context of the 25,373 students who, as of Sept. 1, the university has required to complete a COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Students who don’t physically come to campus are not required to be tested.
Relevant data points in the dashboard include:
- Total active cases, defined as the number of UK students, to the knowledge of UK Health Corps, who have tested positive for COVID-19 and have not yet been released from their respective isolation locations or county health departments.
- Total recovered cases, defined as the number of students who previously tested positive and have since been released from their respective health departments in the counties in which they are isolating. This also applies to cases that are beyond 14 days of the test date.
- Total new cases, defined as the number of students who have tested positive for COVID-19 who did not previously exist in UK's database of detected results.
- Number of students currently in isolation. Self-isolation separates people who have tested positive for COVID-19 from the general population. Notably, this differs from quarantine, which separates and restricts the movement of people who were exposed, but have not tested positive, to COVID-19.
- Percentage of students and employees who have completed the required daily screening. All students and employees who come on to campus are required to complete a COVID-19 screening, every day, seven days a week. Completion of this screening is necessary to remain in compliance with university requirements.
- UK-collected test results to date. These data reflect COVID-19 test results conducted through on-campus testing and retesting (by Wild Health and/or University Health Service) from the beginning of the semester through present day.

Schmidt Futures: Futures Forum on Learning: Tools Competition Learn more / Sept 18, 2020
This Tools Competition invites teachers, students, researchers, technologists, and ed tech leaders to propose a tool, technology, platform, or research project that can accelerate recovery from COVID-19-related learning loss for students between grades K-12 and advance the field of learning engineering. Schmidt Futures and Citadel Founder and CEO Ken Griffin are working together to help launch the competition with up to $2 million in awards.
The Lung Ambition Alliance: Junior Faculty Research Grants for the Study of Lung Cancer and COVID-19 Infection Learn more / Sept 15, 2020
The purpose of this program is to fund groundbreaking research related to COVID-19 infected lung cancer patients. The intent of the support is to allow junior faculty researchers, as defined as fewer than 7 years in a faculty position after training, to obtain preliminary data that will enable them to successfully compete for national peer-reviewed grant support.
Foundation for Women's Cancer (FWC) Diversity and Inclusion Health Equity Research Grant Learn more / Sept 21, 2020
This new Diversity and Health Equity Research Grant is a one-year project where the funding is available for two $75,000 Research grants. The purpose of this award is to support research to understand and eliminate inequities in cancer care, specifically related to differential outcomes experienced by women from underserved or marginalized populations with gynecologic cancer, as well as to increase representation of underrepresented groups in gynecologic oncology as a strategy to achieve health equity for underserved women. Those eligible for applying are those who propose a study focused on a marginalized group, or those who identify as being from an under-represented group within the field of research.

On July 27, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) introduced the Health, Economic Assistance, Liability Protection and Schools (HEALS) Act, the Senate Republican Phase IV COVID-19 package. The HEALS Act provides $15.5 billion for NIH, $4.5 billion for NASA, and $306 million for the Department of Energy Office of Science.
Specifically, for NIH, the funding includes $12.9B to prevent, prepare for, and respond to COVID-19 domestically or internationally. The bill allocates $240 million in cost-extensions to support for existing research awards. This includes resources targeting young researchers who need additional research time as postdoctoral candidates because of lost research/training due to COVID-19. This measure is currently being negotiated with the U.S. House of Representatives and the White House as Congress considers the fourth COVID-19 emergency relief package.
In April, UK Federal Relations began advocating for additional support for the federal research enterprise. We requested additional funding for research agencies to provide cost-extensions and for more fellowship and traineeship slots be supported with additional funding to assist graduate students and postdocs. As Congress continues to negotiate this package, UK will continue our advocacy efforts on behalf of the UK research enterprise.
