Dr. Edward Lo is an environmental geoscientist and graduate of the University of Kentucky Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. His dissertation research has focused on understanding sediment generation, transport, and storage in the Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland. Specifically, he used modern river sediments to identify the most influential environmental factors affecting the mineral composition of coarse and fine sediments. The results from this study will help us understand how these environments record environmental change in the global tropics, which is projected to be home to more than 50% of the world’s population by 2050. Closer to home, I have created and taught a new course, “Geoscience and Environmental Justice” in spring 2022. I have been working closely with the UK Appalachian Center to understand what modern river sediments can tell us about water quality and geohazards in the Stinking Creek watershed in rural Knox County, southeast Kentucky.
