"We looked at elementary and middle school performance on the K-PREP reading and math assessments, as well as the performance of high school students on the ACT. Student, community and district characteristics were also taken into consideration."

A major initiative of Williams and the Markey Community Impact Office will be the organization and expansion of Markey’s research and outreach portfolio that is focused on reducing cancer and other health disparities based on race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc.

In August, Stevens-Watkins was appointed UK’s Assistant Vice President for Research in Diversity and Inclusion after President Eli Capilouto announced a five-year, $10 million commitment to sponsor UK research focused on racial disparities and inequity.

“We have, essentially, invented a new way of doing research. By using publicly available podcasts, anyone can go back and listen to participants’ conversations in full and make their own conclusions about what was discussed,” Vasquez Heilig said.

Founded in 1896 in a time where Black women were not permitted in other prominent feminist organizations, the NACWC Inc. is the first organization created specifically for Black women. The WISE chapter at UK will be the first chapter of the association in Kentucky.

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award, a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion throughout their campus.

Recent studies have shed light on an area’s socioeconomic status being one of the most impactful social determinants of health in both urban and rural communities throughout Kentucky.

Each fellow will receive a $32,000 per year stipend as well as support for cost of education for two years through the grant. Fellows will receive coaching, academic and community support, professional development, and access to opportunities for research, writing and presentation.

UK College of Education Professor Cheryl E. Matias has received national recognition for her work in racial justice and teacher education as recipient of the 2020 American Educational Research Association’s Mid-Career Award in Division K (Teaching and Teacher Education).
