The Center for Health Equity Transformation is now accepting applications for its health equity-focused pilot grants through April 1. The awards are open to health equity studies affecting vulnerable groups or populations affected by health disparities.

“We are so delighted to bring ‘Breaking the Silence: Lillian Smith’ to the UK community,” said Kathryn Engle. “Her life and works crosscut the fields of Appalachian studies, gender and women's studies, queer studies, education, Southern studies, literature, civil rights history, and African American studies.

As the first person in her family to pursue a bachelor’s degree and study engineering, Savannah Lewis describes the feeling as daunting yet rewarding. “Knowing that I’m helping this profession become more diverse, by increasing representation, makes me extremely proud.”

The J. David Rosenberg College of Law hosted a day-long symposium on Breonna Taylor on October 23, 2020. The panels probed the legal issues surrounding the criminal charges and defenses, search warrant inconsistencies, damages awarded to the family, the federal investigation, and the impact of race on policing.

Gathan Borden said that 2020 brought increased pressure for accountability by the affinity groups of the bourbon industry. “We are now seeing brands start to be more vocal and visible in their work support of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts."

"Dr. Collett serves in many roles as vice chair of the university senate, a valued member on the DEI Leadership Team, a skilled teacher, an accreditation specialist and a practicing clinician. I was fortunate to learn many things from her during our conversation," said George Wright.

“It is important for schools to embrace students during painful events, to acknowledge their potential pain and stress and provide ways to help process traumas,” said Gregory Vincent, a professor in the UK College of Education Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation.

Breonna Taylor’s death sparked a year of social unrest, deep questioning about the depths of systemic racism, and potential and actual policy reforms, designed to hasten change on campus, in the Commonwealth and across the country.

COVID-19 has brought to light many things throughout the past year — the importance of health and safety, taking care of yourself and loved ones and trusting in science and technology. It’s also highlighted the prevalence of anti-Asian racism.

“This institution has an impressive history of women leaders who have shaped our identity as Kentucky’s university,” said UK President Eli Capilouto. “As we celebrate Women’s History Month in March, I am humbled by the stories of these women and equally proud of those who serve at UK today.”
