Alan Daugherty, senior associate dean for research at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, has been selected to serve as chair of Scientific Committee of the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation, an organization that trains medical students to be leaders in cardiovascular science and medicine.

Daugherty’s three-year term on the leadership of the committee lasts through June 2023. He is currently serving as vice chair and will hold the positions of chair and immediate past chair in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

The mission of Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation is to develop medical students throughout their careers into the next generation of leaders in cardiovascular innovation, research and medicine by providing mentored research experience and lifelong community.

The organization’s fellowship offers opportunities for outstanding medical students to explore careers in cardiovascular research. To expand their exposure to the breadth of cardiovascular research, Sarnoff fellows conduct intensive work in a U.S. research laboratory that is not at their current medical center. Members of the scientific committee guide the fellows during the research year and throughout the fellow’s career.

“It is an honor to be selected to be Chair of the committee of the Sarnoff Foundation, which has a phenomenal track record of developing physician-scientists,” Daugherty said. “The program makes a lifetime commitment to their fellows, and the mentorship and experiences offered lead many to choose a career in cardiovascular research.”

Daugherty has served on the foundation’s scientific committee since 2016. Learn more about the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation and fellowship at https://www.sarnofffoundation.org/page/Fellowship_Info
