The University of Kentucky Office of Undergraduate Research is offering an information session about the Beckman Scholars Program for undergraduates interested in pursuing an advanced science degree or other scientific pursuits.

Chad Risko, Ph.D., faculty director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and associate professor of chemistry, will host the virtual information session 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, via Zoom, to give students the opportunity to learn about the prestigious program.

The UK Beckman Scholars Program is titled Scholars United by Chemistry: Cultivating Excellence through Science Stewardship (SUCCESS). Funded by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, two UK undergraduate researchers are selected each year for the duration of the award to receive a $21,000 research stipend to facilitate 15 months of mentored research, in addition to $5,000 provided for the mentor-directed research. Beckman Scholar candidates are screened based on their field of research, established programs and commitment to undergraduate research.

“That UK was awarded a Beckman Scholars Program by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation is a testament both to our outstanding undergraduate researchers and mentors at UK. We are excited to see this year’s applicants from across campus,” said Risko.

The duration and funding provide exceptional undergraduate students in chemistry, biological sciences and associated interdisciplinary combinations an elevated level of engagement with their research mentors through an uninterrupted, financially supported undergraduate research experience that spans one academic year and two summers. Each Beckman Scholar is internally selected by a panel of UK leaders.

Prospective scholars must apply with one of 13 internally selected UK Beckman Scholars Program mentors. For participating faculty research mentors, click here.

Space is limited for this information session. Students interested in attending should register here. For more information, visit http://our.uky.edu/BeckmanScholars.
