The research team will use LiDAR data to characterize existing sinkholes, and to assess the area for risk of future sinkhole hazards. Informational tools will be developed to aid data collection, including a web-based reporting system for sinkhole collapses.

“There remains no validated risk stratification tool for identifying a subpopulation of adults with a prevalence of asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis with a higher population-attributable risk that would lead to a benefit of intervention beyond risk factor management,” Larry Goldstein explains.

“More women die of heart disease than all cancers combined,” Dr. Gretchen Wells said. “Most people are usually shocked when I tell them that, but it is true. Heart disease is the number one killer of women.”

The NKAA Database was introduced in 2003 by University of Kentucky librarians Reinette Jones and Rob Aken. The project’s web pages, which focus on African Americans in and from Kentucky from the 1700s to the present, were developed to bring together names, places, events and sources where additional information could be found.

Prediabetes and diabetes are big problems in Kentucky. According to the 2019 Kentucky Diabetes Report, one in 10 Kentucky adults have been told by a medical professional that they have prediabetes. An additional 12% have diabetes, and Kentucky has the fourth highest mortality rate due to diabetes in the nation.

Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the 10-week “Research in Symmetries” program will take place June 7-Aug. 13, 2021, on UK’s campus. The program focuses on individually mentored research projects in nuclear physics, condensed matter physics and astronomy, through the central theme of symmetry.
